His size and energy earned 23-year-old Andrew Smith the nickname "Smurf," an image now commemorated on the side of an H&J towing truck - the one Smith was operating when he was struck and killed January 4 along Route 581 near Lemoyne.
"I wake up everyday thinking he is going to call me or text me," Andrew's mother Gigi said.
So now, during National Move Over Law Awareness Week, Gigi is taking action to publicize a law that she feels many don't even know exists.
"The law is there to save people's lives and people are just not adhering to it," she said.
Already this year, nine tow truck drivers have been killed while assisting stranded drivers across the United States. Andrew Smith was the second fatality.
The law also applies to other roadside responders.
"It does apply to fire, police, EMS, tow trucks, and any other motorist who becomes stranded on the side of the road," Penn Township police officer Tricia Moench said. "It's dangerous for all of us."
Following Smith's death, the tight knit community of tow truck operators paid tribute to their fallen brother by carrying his body to rest on the bed of his favorite wrecker, but his spirit is carried on through decals on a tow truck, on jewelry worn by his family, in the likeness of his three-year-old son, and hopefully, the message his death leaves behind.
